Investing in volunteer management

A different kind of investment – what does your organisation stand to gain?

About the programme

In May 2009, following the recommendations of the 2008 Commission on the Future of Volunteering, the Office of the Third Sector (now replaced by the Office for Civil Society) announced a new two-year, £3 million programme providing support to people who manage volunteers. Capacitybuilders is managing the Volunteer Management Programme, according to the following three Strands:

  • Strand A: A 2 year grant fund for local volunteer infrastructure organisations to provide local outreach to volunteer managers.
  • Strand B: Two years national strategic support of volunteer management led by Volunteering England.
  • Strand C: up to £1 million bursary fund to pay for training for people who manage volunteers.

Over the next 12 months, Volunteering England will be focusing on the delivery of two key pieces of work as part of Strand B of the Volunteer Management Programme:

The Value Volunteer Management Campaign aims to increase awareness of the value and importance of investing in volunteer management, targeting Chief Executives, Director Generals, Vice Chancellors and other key decision-makers in volunteer-involving organisations. Many key organisations have already shown support, including the BBC, Microsoft, Barnardo’s, RSPB, National Trust and PDSA. Visit the campaign site at http://www.volunteering.org.uk/valuevolunteermanagement and find out what your organisation stands to gain from investing in volunteer management!

The campaign also supports people who manage volunteers, aiming to equip them with influencing skills and tools. The Volunteer Management Team has developed a workshop and guide to “influencing up”, which help people managing volunteers to approach senior management and gain executive support for volunteering and volunteer management. To download a free copy of the “Influencing Up” guide, please visit http://www.volunteering.org.uk/vmportal. If you are interested in finding out more about the workshop, please contact us at valueVM@volunteeringengland.org.

The second piece of work is the Volunteer Management Portal, which sign-posts to information, support, training and development opportunities for people who manage volunteers. It acts as a gateway to the world of volunteer management with links to over a thousand resources across England. If you work with volunteers, or know someone who does, this invaluable new resource will help you locate a wide variety of training providers and consultants, support and development opportunities. The Volunteer Management Team

Amy New - Head of Volunteer Management

Amy has previously volunteered with several non-profits abroad, as well as with charities in the UK. Most recently, she established and ran a British charity in Peru, working with young people and their families.

Having managed volunteers herself as part of an already bursting agenda, she can fully sympathise with the many volunteer managers who are in similar positions! She is keen to help improve matters for them and for the volunteers they work with.

Ally Hammock – Senior Volunteer Management Officer

Ally first became passionate about Volunteer Management whilst running a local charity shop with a small team of volunteers. Since then, she has worked on national volunteer programmes and, most recently, spent three years managing volunteer projects at Volunteer Centre Wandsworth.

Ally is very excited to be working on the Volunteer Management Programme and hopes to make a significant impact, providing support to the Volunteer Management Campaign and people managing volunteers across England.
